The years following World War II were a time of great economic growth and promise for a better future. Many American soldiers returned home restless and eager for new challenges and experiences. DeMartis traveled this country from coast to coast and up to Alaska and the Far East. Adventuring and attending art schools along the way before returning to Europe for formal art studies.

The dark, somber palette and sometimes grotesque images reflect the state of mind of the expatriate far from home and family.
